Read this background piece in preparation for examining primary source documents about events in the Gulf of Tonkin
Read through the documents, being sure to take note of the source and date each was written. Develop a thesis statement that answers the following question: "Were the events in the Gulf of Tonkin in August of 1964 a legitimate reason to authorize the President to send combat troops to Vietnam?" Select at least 5 documents you would use to support your thesis
Take notes during the film in order to answer these questions
Read about the Tet Offensive, and be sure you can describe its importance, not only as a turning point in the war, but in terms of its effect on public opinion in the U.S. regarding the Vietnam conflict.
